The foundation of Design & Co.’s approach resides in the leadership of Timothy Downing, Founder and Design Principal. Since 2001, Tim has worked to create a branding and interactive design firm built on the rigors of quality design and high-level project execution.

Tim’s training and practice in the field of architecture has fostered a design process founded in thoughtful project exploration as a means to consistent, singular design solutions that are sophisticated and easily penetrable.

Timothy M. Downing Owner & Design Principal
Timothy M. Downing Owner & Design Principal Since co-founding Design & Co. in 2001, Tim has built a well-honed, multi-disciplinary team of design, business strategy, copy editing, photography and video, and technical talent for the task of creating industry leading brand expressions for its clients. To each project engagement, Tim brings uncommon candor, insight, and an unfailing loyalty to a client’s value proposition and future success. Tim received his formal design training in architecture, having received a Master of Architecture from Yale University in 1996 and a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University in 1988. Prior to co-founding D&CO, Tim practiced architecture in Boston’s most reputable design firms. As Design Principal at D&CO, the firm has received 18 regional and two national communication awards from the Society of Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) and an American Graphic Design Award from Graphic Design/USA.
Nancy Jenner Brand Strategist
Nancy Jenner Brand Strategist Nancy is an innovative collaborator and strategic thinker with extensive experience in brand development and management. As a researcher and strategist, she values inclusive design processes that engage diverse stakeholders to understand and articulate each client's unique value proposition and brand attributes. Nancy has worked for more than 30 years helping organizations and companies understand their core business and refine their messaging to expand audiences and increase revenue. Her executive career includes serving as the senior researcher and brand strategist at Minelli, Inc., Director of Communications and Strategic Partnerships at North Bennet Street School and Deputy Director at the Boston Society of Architects. A former publisher and editor, she understands that good ideas are elevated when communicated through elegant writing and strong design. Nancy received an MFA from Tufts University.
Bill Purdin Copy Director
Bill Purdin Copy Director Bill has lived in ten states, fought in a war, spent eight years in college and graduate school; he’s been a teacher, a writer, a publisher, an advertising executive, a photographer, and a freefall skydiving instructor. His career began at The New York Times. What he really likes to do is study, research and write. He has worked for over 300 clients and on over 17,000 projects, not including his own books and poetry. For him, every project is a challenge of intuition and description. Bill believes that there is a story in everything if you dig deep enough, think hard enough, and if you really want to find it. Bill really wants to find it.
Jennifer LaVin Senior Copy Writer
Jennifer LaVin Senior Copy Writer With more than 25 years’ experience in corporate communications, investor relations, public relations, and finance, Jennifer is a seasoned strategic communications professional skilled at storytelling and crafting core content that effectively reflects a company's personality, vision, and value proposition. Her core strengths lie in audience identification and message development to effectively reach specific targets, while ensuring consistency across all media. In addition to extensive consulting experience, Jennifer has served as head of communications at multiple life science companies, where she was responsible for all investor- and media-related strategy development and implementation, and as a sellside analyst at Merrill Lynch, where she followed the mid-cap and specialty pharmaceutical sector. Jennifer received a BA in Biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from Columbia Business School, where she made Dean's List and was selected for membership in the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society.
Genevieve de Manio Photographer
Genevieve de Manio Photographer Since the company’s founding, Gigi has created engaging and memorable portraits, lifestyle photographs, and architectural and food photographs for numerous D&CO clients. Noteworthy projects include food/product photography for Russo’s, Katsiroubas Produce, the Cottage Restaurant, and Perimeter Brand Packaging; architectural photography for Pembroke Real Estate and LStar Ventures; and lifestyle and portrait photography for Akebia Therapeutics, Adimab, Blueprint Medicines, Avitide, Pickard Chilton, ARC, and Amagma Therapeutics. When not taking photographs for D&CO, Gigi works as one of the nation’s preeminent wedding photographers, having photographed events throughout the country and internationally, including the Chelsea Clinton/Marc Mezvinsky and Nate Berkus/Jeremiah Brent weddings. Gigi received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Hollins University in Roanoke, VA and is a graduate of the Portfolio Center in Atlanta, GA.
Gary Pikovsky Creative Director
Gary Pikovsky Creative Director A native of Kiev, Ukraine, Gary brings over 9 years of cross-media design experience to the D&CO team. Prior to joining Design & Co., Gary worked at a number of domestic and international studios, including Pentagram, Beam Interactive, The Partners and Weymouth Design. As a design leader and contributor, Gary has participate in projects that have won numerous design awards and honors, including those form Graphis, FWA Site of the Day, Awwwards Site of the Day, Print, Then BoNE Show, HOW International, and Art Directors Club. Gary received his Bachelor of Science in Design from the University of Cincinnati and a Master of Science in Design from North Carolina State University, When he is not problem solving or writing in third-person, Gary enjoys windsurfing, zoology, and semi-ripe nectarines.
Christina Van Vleck Senior Designer
Christina Van Vleck Senior Designer Christina has been a lead designer for Design & Co. since 2003. In addition to her superior skills as a graphic and web designer, Christina specializes in the communication of complex information. She has over 15 years of experience designing both print and digital collateral, including brand/identity systems, annual reports, brochures, books, conference materials, websites and infographics. Christina holds a MFA in Graphic Design from Boston University and a BA in International Affairs, Economics, and Environmental Studies from New York University.
Bridget Stone Senior Designer
Bridget Stone Senior Designer Prior to joining D&CO in 2013, Bridget was the Senior Graphic Designer at NEMO Equipment, an outdoor equipment company with an intense focus on specialized product design. Under Bridget’s lead, NEMO’s visual brand was elevated and refined, cementing the company’s street cred in the innovative gear market and increasing brand recognition both domestically and internationally. She created thoughtful and innovative design across all media, including print, packaging, environment, and web. Bridget is also an experienced freelance designer, with clients as diverse as Boston Children’s Hospital, Charlestown Maritime Center, and MIT. She is a graduate of Massachusetts College of Art and Design and Colgate University. When not facing the cinema display of her Mac, Bridget can usually be found on her yoga mat or listening to Jay Z.
Mark James Creative Director
Mark James Creative Director Mark joined D&CO in 2019, bringing over 20 years of experience as a creative director and brand strategist. Mark’s work in brand development, identity design, digital design, and print collateral has been recognized nationally and internationally by The American Institute of Graphic Arts, The Type Director’s Club, Graphis, and others. His client engagements have included design, branding and digital work for Harvard Business School, Solidworks Corporation, American Express, MetLife, Verizon, Physicians for Human Rights, and many technology start-ups. Prior to joining the D&CO team, Mark held in-house creative director roles at CVS Health, Mass Mutual Financial, and the Harvard Innovation Labs. Mark also serves as a consulting creative director to Santa Fe Workshops in New Mexico. Passionate about design education, he has taught visual design and design thinking at The University of the Arts, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, and currently is an adjunct professor at Lesley University’s College of Art and Design in Cambridge, MA where he teaches a two-semester class of visual communication. Mark is an accomplished photographer, shooting mainly editorial and portrait assignments, and is never without a camera. When it’s time to break from design and image-making, he is often on his road or mountain bike, or on skis in the winter. The pile of half-read books on his nightstand seems to be growing taller but he swears he is making progress!
Christina Glover Designer
Christina Glover Designer Since joining D&CO in 2015, Christina has contributed her signature bold design style to important D&CO projects, including Sea-Dar Construction’s new website, Fractyl's website, and numerous projects for Akebia Therapeutics. Christina received a BFA in Graphic Design from the Massachusetts College of Art in 2015.
Sarah Freni Designer
Sarah Freni Designer The newest member of the D&CO design team, Sarah brings seven years of experience as a freelance graphic designer. Her considered approach to design in brand/identity systems, infographics, brochures, reports, and website design is communicated creatively and crafted with care. Sarah graduated from Massachusetts College of Art and Design with a BFA in Graphic Design in 2016.
